A Taste of The Mission

Although I am a San Francisco native, the Mission District is a neighborhood I am still discovering and devouring.

I recently moved to 17th and Guerrero this past February from my foggy bubble in the Richmond District (where I was born and raised). Since I moved out of the fog-belt, a love affair with The Mission has blossomed and developed, and continues to grow even 9 months later.

I am proud to live in The Mission because of my Latin and Irish roots (my mother’s side of the family moved to San Francisco from Bogota, Colombia in 1964 and somebody on my dad’s side came to California during the Gold Rush), however, this is not the only reason why I chose to move to this neighborhood. What really draws me to The Mission is the fact that it has so much to offer.

As a self-proclaimed foodie, I am not at all picky. When it comes to food—I eat it all… and The Mission has A LOT of it. Yes, there are many Latino restaurants throughout The Mission, but you can find international cuisines as well. The Mission features Chinese, American, Burmese, Italian, Middle-Eastern, and Cajun/Creole—to name a few. There are even a bunch of Vegan and Vegetarian restaurants, if I really want to dive into those!

Listed below are just a handful of places I recommend:

DAYTIME/EVENING GO-TO places:

Clare’s Deli $$$$ 3505 17th Street @ Guerrero
Lazlo $$$$ 2526 Mission Street b/t 21st & 22nd
Loló $$$$ 974 Valencia Street b/t Liberty & 21st

LATE NIGHT GRUB GUILTY PLEASURES:

Taqueria Cancún $$$$ 2288 Mission Street @ 19th

TO-DO LIST:

The Abbot’s Cellar $$$$ 742 Mission Street b/t 18th & 19th
C.R.E.A.M. $$$$ 3106 16th Street @ Valencia
Mission Chinese Food $$$$ 2234 Mission Street b/t 18th & 19th

PERSONAL PREFERENCE:
Clare’s Delicatessen:  A bowl of their famous Broccoli Cheddar Soup and the 500 Club Sandwich
Lazlo:  A Bloody-Mary accompanied by the Beef Carpaccio, Oaxaca style Calamari and the Duck Three Ways
Lolo:  Panko Avocado, Tuna Tacon and Taco Tropical
Taqueria Cancun:  Any spinach tortilla super burrito with everything, and don’t forget the green hot sauce! (It’s really mild)

500 Club Sandwich Beef Carpaccio Taco Tropical

These a just a few of the numerous dishes waiting for me to eat greedily. My boyfriend and I are spoiled with substantial food just feet from our apartment. Now don’t get me wrong, we love to cook together but we unquestionably yearn for a novel meal.

Undoubtedly, The Mission has so much more to offer—including eclectic shopping and a thriving nightlife—but that will have to wait for another post.

Until next time,

S
